uncertain conversation ahead?

Uncertainty about what to do next can be difficult to face.

So sometimes, we react to the feeling of uncertainty with renewed commitment to projecting absolute certainty.

We double down on our point, even though we’re not exactly sure what it was anymore.

We tell, and retell the story about what happened in that conversation over and over again inside of our own brains, until the version we see becomes the only possible perspective that exists.

We get busy, so busy that we don’t have time or room in our schedules to talk.

But when we look close enough, often these reactions don’t have anything to do with the actual issue at hand.

We’ve ingested the message that uncertainty is where our story ends. That to admit uncertainty is to blindly surrender our strength.

In conversations that are genuinely focused on productivity, on generating real solutions, on discovering and sharing important information that we didn’t know before, uncertainty isn’t a death knell. It’s a new beginning. An opportunity to shift directions and make a new choice.

Uncertainty can be difficult to face, but it’s not the end. Uncertainty can provide the openings we need to grow and connect with each other in new ways, instead of drilling down deep into what we already know.
